The decline and fall of an automotive empire
The New York Times has a solid article on what's going wrong with the American auto industry. Short answer: Everything. Need details? Bad design, bad service, complacency (still!), and, of course, legacy costs. The industry has become absurdly long-tail, but even so what they do in the next year or two will determine whether they're reasonably prosperous in twenty years on bankrupt in ten.
